Celebrating the life of
Geneva Youmans Mitchell
March 11, 1935 - August 18, 2024
Geneva Youmans Mitchell was welcomed home by her Lord and Savior on August 18, 2024. She passed away peacefully at her home after battling a long-time illness with Alzheimer’s. Born on March 11, 1935, in Swainsboro, Georgia, she was raised in Excelsior and spent most of her life in Savannah.
Geneva graduated from Pulaski High School in Candler County, class of 1953, and dedicated her life to her Lord, her family, and her church. As a devoted housewife, she raised her five children with love and care. After raising her children, she also contributed to her community through her work at C&S Bank, which became Bank of America, where she remained until her retirement, then she worked at SunTrust for several years. Geneva’s warm heart, love for people, and unwavering faith left a lasting impression on everyone she met. She had a servant’s heart, making all who crossed her path feel loved and welcomed. She looked well to the ways of her household by cooking, sewing, gardening, and preserving the fruits of her labor through canning and freezing.
Geneva was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Ronald Estus Mitchell, with whom she shared 46 prosperous years of marriage; her parents, Bryant Leslie Youmans and Eva Mae (Smith) Youmans; her grandson, Timothy James Brackeen; son-in-law, Robert O. Brown; and nine of her ten siblings, along with several nieces and nephews.
She is survived by her two sons, Wayne A. Mitchell and Stephen Estus Mitchell, both of Richmond Hill: three daughters, Phyllis (Jim) Brackeen, Karen M. Brown, and Lisa Zipperer (Truitt) Eavenson, all of Savannah, GA. She is also survived by her sister, Doris Tereau of New Prague, Minnesota. Geneva is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, a soon-to-be great-great-grandchild, and many nieces and nephews.
Geneva was a long-time member of Bible Baptist Church in Savannah, where she dedicated many years to teaching children’s and adult ladies’ Sunday School. She served as a counselor at a local crisis pregnancy center, worked with the benevolence committee, and, most importantly, was a role model as a loving wife and mother to her children.
Her favorite Bible verse, Proverbs 3:5-6, was a guiding light in her life: Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons: Wayne Ashley Mitchell, Stephen Brackeen, Noah Mitchell, Josh Mitchell, Christopher Zipperer, and Carey Zipperer. Geneva’s life was a testament to her faith, and her legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.

Mrs. Geneva was a Jesus woman. Her life demonstrated that through her strong faith and selflessness. She was a servant of God and a precious friend to our mother. What a legacy she has left for your family and all that knew her. All the Hahns were impacted by her sweet giving spirit and rich kindness. With deepest sympathies, Donald Hahn, Susan. Linda, Renee, Don, Jr. & the "Hahnettes"- Sara, Elizabeth and Sandra.

This sweet lady has been part of Susie's life from birth. She had such a pleasant personality all our lives. She made the Maid of Honor and Flower Girls gold velvet dresses used in our wedding and she designed the flower girl dress without a pattern. Susie grew up admiring Geneva's work as a seamstress. Franklin loved her gentle spirit and always found Geneva a delight. We both love knowing there is NO ALTZHEIMER'S in Heaven and we look forward to embracing her again one day and she will know us again! What a beautiful HOPE. Once there we will no longer even need 'hope' because it will be reality with Christ for all of eternity. Yaye!
